Neurodivergent & Executive Function Coaching & Consulting

FOR CHILDREN, TEENS, FAMILIES & SCHOOLS

What are Executive Functions?

Executive Functions are like the brain’s management system. Think of it as an airport’s control tower that continues to develop until we’re in our mid 20s. Executive Functions help us plan, stay organised, focus, remember instructions, and manage our time. These skills are what allow children and young people to start something, follow through, and finish it—whether it’s homework, cleaning a room, or getting ready for school on time. When a child or teen has strong executive functions, they can think ahead, shift focus when needed, control impulses, manage their emotions and problem solve when things don’t go as planned.

For children who experience executive function challenges, these abilities may not come easily. They might be smart and capable but still forget assignments, misplace materials, struggle to get started on tasks, or become really upset when routines change. It’s not about being lazy or defiant—it’s about their brain needing extra support to help develop the systems and habits that other students might take for granted. With the right tools, strategies, and support from adults, children and teens with executive function challenges can learn to build these skills over time.

What is Executive Function Coaching?

Executive Function Coaching is a client led approach to behaviour change based on neuroscientific research.

It supports clients to develop self-awareness and form new habits, enhancing their lives and helping them become more independent.

All strategies are developed collaboratively with the client, family and school, as appropriate, and with consent.

Executive Function coaching differs from other approaches, and uses a combination of strategies, depending on the client’s age and goals.

Who is Executive Function Coaching for?

In short, everyone!

For us, here at Maruri Consulting, our focus is primary and secondary school aged children and young people.

Some children and teens require coaching to move from good to great with a few strategies to help with study techniques … managing emotions… or even learning how to best prioritise those ‘boring’ yet necessary tasks.

Others still, might have a developmental diagnosis, such as Autism, ADHD, Learning Difficulties, or are coping with mental health challenges, trauma, big changes, or increased social expectations. All of these things can have an adverse impact on executive functioning.
